Support Local Black Businesses With a Traveling “Block Party” That Kicks Off This Sunday in Harlem

Reported by POPSUGAR:

Look, I love a good block party — and it’s not just because my last name happens to be “Block” — but a block party with a purpose? Now we’re really talking!

Food and travel brand Thrillist is partnering with Harlem’s “Queen of Hospitality” Tren’ness Woods-Black — granddaughter of Sylvia Woods, founder of the iconic Harlem soul food restaurant Sylvia’s — for a very cool traveling experiential event: Thrillist Block Party. These events are focused on supporting, celebrating, and promoting local food and culture while, most importantly, giving back to the communities and local businesses hit hard by this pandemic through accelerator programs that include pro-bono creative marketing services, monetary donations, and donated ad impressions.

“Our communities are the unbreakable thread that stitches neighborhoods together.”

“Our communities are the unbreakable thread that stitches neighborhoods together,” said Woods-Black. “Block parties were created to celebrate that unique cultural essence, while giving a platform for local businesses and residents alike to thrive.”

Thrillist Block Party kicks off this weekend — Sunday, Sept. 12 — in Harlem, New York, and you do NOT want to miss out on this incredible event! The party runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Adam Clayton Powell Jr. State Office Building plaza on 126th Street with a packed schedule that includes a Black Greek Fraternity and Sorority unity stroll, a parade, a voguing and ballroom competition, music like a gospel open mic and DJ set by Sundae Sermon, roller skating, food trucks from Harlem restaurants, an open-air marketplace featuring local Black businesses, and more.

If you’re not in NYC this weekend, don’t worry, Thrillist Block Party will be traveling to cities like New Orleans, Atlanta, and Los Angeles, so stay tuned for more ways you can party with a purpose.
