Today’s Headlines

Apple killed off the 12-inch MacBook

Apple announced a slew of back-to-school updates to its MacBook line, most of which were a slight reshuffling and a lean-in to its mildly controversial Touch Bar. But Apple also said goodbye to a beloved member of the lineup: the 12-inch MacBook. The gorgeous and ultralight laptop, introduced in 2015, became largely redundant when Apple recommitted to the MacBook Air last year, but you can still pick one up for old times’ sake in Apple’s refurbished section.

A Zoom flaw could let hackers hijack your webcam

Many people like using the videoconferencing application Zoom because of its ease of use—but its simplicity has also led it to a slew of vulnerabilities, one of which allows hackers to access your webcam just by tricking you into clicking a link. The company says it’ll push a fix tonight, but if you want to protect yourself right now, you should adjust these settings in the meantime: Settings/Preferences > Video > Meetings > Turn off my video when joining a meeting. Oh, and get a webcam cover.

But why, then, do groups like the Bedouin—who live in the deserts of Northern Africa—wear black? It has to do with not just light reflection but also evaporation, wind, and how much distance is between the fabric and the skin. White clothing will keep you cooler generally, but depending on those variables and more, in some cases black may actually be better.
