Donald Trump floats waiver for service academy athletes

Reported by Washington Times:

President Trump said Monday he wants to see a waiver system that lets service academy athletes play in the pros before fulfilling their active-duty obligations.

“They’ll serve their time after they’re done with professional sports,” Mr. Trump said.

Speaking at the White House Rose Garden, he said the waiver would allow young athletes to fulfill their dreams, while making it easier for places like West Point to recruit the best players.

“Yes, sir,” agreed Army football coach Jeff Monken, who joined his squad in accepting the Commander-in-Chief Trophy from Mr. Trump.

The Army Black Knights won the trophy, which is contested among Army, Navy and the Air Force, in December, making them back-to-back winners.

Mr. Trump detailed the Black Knights’ victories in vivid detail, hailing individual players and their collective mettle in an 11-2 season.

“Every time you enter the field, you prove that you are ‘Army Strong,’ ” Mr. Trump said.
