Rep. Sherman: If Sarah Sanders thought intellect mattered she ‘would have chosen another employer’

Reported by Washington Times:

Rep. Brad Sherman slammed White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders Wednesday for claiming Congressional Democrats were not “smart enough” to review President Trump’s tax returns.

“I’m surprised to see Sarah Sanders talking about intelligence. If she thought that was an important characteristic, she probably would have chosen another employer,” the California Democrat said on CNN’s “Newsroom” show Wednesday.

Mr. Sherman, who is a certified public accountant, followed the quip by saying he and the Congressional Accounting Caucus could “obviously…understand whatever documents are produced.”

“I think to not turn them over without defense and to attack the intelligence of members of Congress is the only thing that the president’s spokesperson can do,” he continued.

Mrs. Sanders called House Democrats’ request for six years of Mr. Trump’s tax returns a “disgusting overreach” while speaking on “Fox News Sunday.”

“This is a dangerous, dangerous road and frankly, Chris, I don’t think Congress, particularly not this group of congressmen and women, are smart enough to look through the thousands of pages that I would assume that President Trump’s taxes will be,” Mrs. Sanders told “Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace.

“My guess is most of them don’t do their own taxes, and I certainly don’t trust them to look through the decades of success that the president has and determine anything,” she added.

House Democrats have set an April 23 deadline to receive Mr. Trump’s tax returns.
