Today’s Headlines

Tesla’s Model 3 can survive a crash—and avoid one too

The results are in: The Tesla Model 3 is officially one of the safest cars in Europe. In crash testing, the Model 3 got a score of 96 percent for how it protects adults, 86 percent for keeping kids safe, and 74 percent for how it treats “vulnerable road users” like pedestrians. But the Model 3 doesn’t just crash well. Its “safety assist,” which helps it avoid wrecks, scored a whopping 94 percent—no other car that earned five stars earned over 80 percent. Now if only they can get Elon’s crash-avoidance rating a little higher.

Europe’s extreme heat overwhelmed its residents

Last week’s heat wave in Europe was a scorching reminder that climate change is happening. Death Valley was cooler than southern France, where temperatures reached a record-breaking 114.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Heat like that isn’t just uncomfortable, it can overwhelm your body and lead to death. A tip from our writer: “If the temperature is 95 degrees or above, don’t bother with a fan to cool off. It’ll warm you like a convection oven. And don’t drink alcohol. That also makes it more difficult for your body to regulate its core temperature.”

Cocktail Conversation

If you’re wanting to keep your bites and booze cold this weekend, you’re going to need a good cooler. But what makes a good cooler? According to our writer, ones that use closed-cell foam (which is dense and rigid and keeps the gas bubbles away from each other) are more effective than open-cell foam (where the gas bubbles are in contact, making it easier for heat to pass through). If you use large ice blocks, it will melt much slower than if you used the same amount in smaller chunks, and you should try to keep the lid closed as much as possible to keep that evil warm air at bay.
