Time’s Person of the Year: The Silence Breakers

National Hill - TIME

No, Donald Trump didn’t get Time’s Person of the Year. Instead it went to a collective group, The Silence Breakers. This isn’t the first time the magazine has named a movement as the “Person” of the Year. In 2011 the Person of the Year was given to “Protesters”. It was also given to the people who spoke up about the Enron whistle blowers. It also gave the away to “you” in 2006 to celebrate the power of the internet, although that seemed much more like a cop out than an honor.

Hopefully this doesn’t jump start a new trend of the Person of the Year going to a group. It’s starting to feel like that show named Last Man on Earth should have been named Last ‘Men” on Earth. Anyways, The Silence Breakers was a movement that started with some of the original accusers of men like Harvey Weinstein and director James Toback, it was the numerous #MeToos hashtag that pushed the movement forward.

This movement is eye opening and a slap in the face by reality. However it’s important to remember that in this modern time of pitchforks and triggerfests, we need to be careful when it comes to peoples lives. An accusation should not always result in the collective group grabbing their pitchforks. Justice needs to be served when it is deserved, but we need to be careful and tread water lightly.
