The hidden side of politics

Congressman recounts escapes from Israel during attack by Palestinian militants: ‘Barbarism’

Reported by Washington Times:

Rep. Dan Goldman recounted his escape from Israel over the weekend saying the brutality of the attack was “unfathomable.”

“Our experience was traumatic, but of course, it is nothing compared to so many Israelis down in the south [who were] just massacred with barbarism that we have not seen,” he told NBC’s Savannah Guthrie Monday.

Mr. Goldman, New York Democrat, was in Tel Aviv with his family when he heard sirens go off around 6:30 a.m. Saturday. He said that in that section of Israel, they had about 90 seconds to find shelter.

“I had never heard it before. My kids obviously had no idea what was going on,” he said. “So we woke up and sort of scrambled and ran to the stairwell.”

Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that rules Gaza, launched a surprise terrorist assault on Israel on Saturday morning. The group used a multi-pronged attack, shooting rockets and taking Israeli soldiers and civilians captive, which led Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to declare war on the group. Hundreds have died in Israel and in Gaza, due to the attack.

Mr. Goldman said he never expected to see Israel’s Iron Dome defense system in the works.

“What is most important right now, both in the Congress and around this country, is that we have to stand with Israel against this barbaric terrorism,” he said. “That is what it was. It is as bad or worse than ISIS, Al-Qaeda.”

He added that America needs to help “replenish Iron Dome.”

Mr. Goldman wasn’t the only lawmaker who found himself having to seek shelter in Israel – Sen. Cory Booker, New Jersey Democrat, shared on X that he had to seek shelter in his hotel’s stairwell during the attack.

He wrote that he was safe but he and his team “are shaken, angered, and heartbroken by the hundreds killed, the thousands injured, those taken hostage, and all who are directly affected by those sickening terrorist attacks.”
