Sanctions could ease if North Korea threat markedly reduced

Reported by Washington Times:

WASHINGTON (AP) – Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says the U.S. will not ease economic sanctions on North Korea until it is confident that the nuclear weapons threat from Pyongyang has been “substantially reduced.”

Pompeo didn’t elaborate, but his comment Thursday on NBC’s “Today” seemed to leave open the possibility of sanctions relief short of complete and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Ahead of President Donald Trump’s meeting next week with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, a senior administration official said the U.S. is still not sure if Kim has made the decision to give up its nuclear weapons.

The official was not authorized to discuss the summit on the record and spoke only on condition of anonymity.
