Conservative pundit Tucker Carlson was framed as a racist by comedian Stephen Colbert on Wednesday as activists continue a campaign to bleed the Fox News star of advertisers.
Hollywood director Judd Apatow and left-wing activists began targeting “Tucker Carlson Tonight” advertisers last weekend in response to his positions against illegal immigration. CBS’ “The Late Show,” however, added its commentary to the mix by likening him to a racist version of the children’s story “The Little Engine Who Could.”
“Carlson already has a reputation for flirting with racism,” Mr. Colbert told his audience. “But last week he took it to a race-y new level.”
The host then played a clip for Mr. Carlson saying, “We have a moral obligation to admit the world’s poor, [open border activists] tell us, even if it makes our own country poorer and dirtier and more divided.”
“Tucker got a lot of heat for those remarks, but he’s nothing if not a ‘little racist who could,” Mr. Colbert replied.
The comedian then mocked his commentary on garbage littering the routes used to illegally enter the U.S.
Companies like IHOP, Pacific Life and Indeed.com are three of the companies that dropped ads from the conservative’s show since the campaign started.
Farmer’s Insurance, Mitsubishi and John Deere have rejected calls to shun the program.
“It is a shame that left-wing advocacy groups, under the guise of being supposed ‘media watchdogs’ weaponize social media against companies in an effort to stifle free speech,” a Fox News Channel spokesperson said in a statement released Wednesday. “We continue to stand by and work with our advertisers through these unfortunate and unnecessary distractions.”
